Warm Greetings!
With pleasure, Department of Library & Information Science, University of Calcutta invites you to contribute a high quality research paper with meaningful insights both in Indian as well as global context to an edited volume with ISBN.
Objectives of the Book
Public libraries are called people's university. It's a metaphoric and idealistic attribution attached to public libraries. Growth of public libraries from the Pre-British India to modern India has been a fragmented one. Need of life-long learning was felt by our socio-cultural ancestors and their dream of an independent India was in fact first weaved in public libraries. It would not be exaggerating if we say today's modern India is the resultant of that vision. After a long struggle we have got our precious Independence. But unfortunately after independence, what our great leaders envisioned public libraries as a platform for the holistic development of the society has been gradually eroded and reduced as a vestigial organ to the society. It is the hard truth we all know it. Sometimes too much romanticizing proves to be detrimental. Public libraries are not exception. With the inception of computers and internet the whole arena of learning and reading has been changed forever and the organic connection between public libraries and the society has been damaged severely. They have lost societal relevance. With all these in the backdrop, we want to debate and seek to investigate the reasons for present shambles and the path to recreate our future. We strongly believe that fully updated public libraries are still socially relevant and have the power to drive a sustainable social change.
